Program Details

Application Deadline

For all applicants [U.S. Citizens or International]: January 28

Applications will be accepted at any time; however applicants who apply after January 28, if accepted, may need to wait until the following year to begin their program of study.

Degree Requirements

35 credit hours completed over approximately 2.5 years, comprised of three summer field courses (21 credit hours), Web-based learning communities (14 credit hours) and completion of a portfolio. MAT students will be required to complete a teaching portfolio adaptable for National Board Certification requirements, and MA candidates will develop a work portfolio suitable for their work environment. Degree candidates can focus portfolio work in a region (e.g., Africa) or on a theme (e.g., environmental education). Students admitted to the program who have not completed at least one university-level life science course or its equivalent will need to complete one of several options (determined by a GFP committee) for basic biology content as part of the Master's degree program.

Which degree is for me?

Apply to the MAT if you fall in any of the following categories: 1) you are certified to teach, 2) you have an academic degree in education or education related field (i.e., bachelor's or master's), or 3) you have taught or teach in a k-12 school.

The MA is a degree option for any applicant with a bachelor's interested in advancing their career through global leadership, community engagement, and environmental stewardship.

Note: The MAT program does not confer a teaching license. Applicants with no education background should apply for the MA, not the MAT degree.

Field courses are offered every summer, and web-based courses are offered fall/spring.

Prerequisites

Bachelor's degree.

Note: Participants will need to fulfill the minimum Graduate School GPA requirements for admission to the program - details here.
